More than half of working Americans, 56% to be exact, believe they’re behind on their retirement savings goals. The latest stats from a Bankrate survey tell us that 37% think they’re way off, and about a third guess they need over a million to retire well.

So, why the doubt? Many folks have their own savings targets, often from stuff they read online. There’s a lot of advice out there – like saving double your first salary by 35, or 10 times by 60.
